Garden Grove High School Students Create Winning App
- Wednesday, March 23, 2022
A talented team of Garden Grove High School students recently won the 2021 Congressional App Challenge for its original app called “Realms: Health” which gives users a one-stop shop of information for their health care needs. Students who created the app include Joanne Tran, Justin Pham, Eric Ly and Derek Nguyen, and are part of the district’s ICT Computer Science Career Pathway.
The students have taken AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A with teacher Eric Henninger who provided guidance for the project. The Congressional App Challenge was established by the U.S. House of Representatives and is a national event that invites high school students to showcase their creativity and STEM skills by creating a unique computer application. Congressman Lou Correa who represents California’s 46th District hosts the contest annually to encourage students to learn to code and inspire them to pursue careers in computer science.
“Realms: Health” is designed to serve as an ecosystem that allows users to connect with their communities and provides for their medical needs by connecting to live chats with doctors, directions to nearby hospitals, and reminders for prescribed medications. Through a series of quick clicks, users also obtain access to innovative, body-pain identifiers and find information about any health and wellness issues that they may have. The app also lets users create their own account to access exam and lab results, check medical records, and update their account settings with ease.
“We are extremely proud of our students for their innovation and technical expertise to create an app that helps solve current day challenges,” said Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen. “This is a great reminder that we are educating the next generation of tech leaders who will help us solve problems that don’t even exist yet.”
