Garden Grove High School Students Earn Top Rankings in Academic Decathlon

The Garden Grove High School Academic Decathlon team was one of only 10 high schools in Orange County invited to compete at the state level in the California Academic Decathlon which took place virtually March 1-12.  The Argos earned numerous high rankings in a variety of scholastic categories. This comes after the team placed third overall in Division 1 at the Orange County Academic Decathlon which took place over three consecutive Saturdays in January and included 400 students from 32 schools. 

“Our Garden Grove High School scholars should be commended for their academic mastery that led to these exciting county and state recognitions,” said Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen. “We know that our students committed hours upon hours of studying to earn high rankings against other students from across the county and state.” 

The county and state Academic Decathlons include a series of multiple-choice exams, speeches, interviews and essay assignments, all centered around the theme “Water: A Most Essential Resource.” Garden Grove High School Teacher Paul Doan was the team’s advisor and helped students prepare for the rigorous events.

In the state competition, Jolyn Hoang earned third place in Social Science, first in Economics, first in Science, second in Interview and second Overall in the Varsity category.  Eric Ly earned second in Economics and Math. Corey-Tri Nguyen earned first in Economics and Math and second in Music and Overall in the Scholastic category. Alex Trang earned second in Economics.  In the state’s Heptathlon, students Emily Ha earned first in Economics and Lunar Nguyen earned third in math.   

At the county’s Academic Decathlon, in addition to more than a dozen individual accolades, three students earned outstanding overall rankings which earned them monetary awards, including Eric Ly who placed tenth in varsity earning $100; Corey-Tri Nguyen who placed fourth in Scholastic earning $600; and Jolyn Hoang who placed second in Varsity earning $800 as well as receiving the $1,000 Robert Peterson Scholarship.

Orange County’s first Academic Decathlon was held at Bolsa Grande High School in 1968.
