GGUSD Awarded $6.2-Million Common Core Grant

The Garden Grove Unified School District is the recipient of a five-year, $6.2-million grant from the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation to support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in mathematics for grades K-8.

The grant will help district elementary and intermediate schools in effectively transitioning to the standards through professional development, collaboration between teachers and administrators, and in the acquisition of standards-aligned instructional materials and new assessments. 

The new Common Core standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges, thus preparing them for the 21st century economy. 

The GGUSD joins nine other California school districts as Math in Common grantees: Dinuba, Elk Grove, Long Beach, Oakland, Oceanside, Sacramento City, San Francisco, Sanger, and Santa Ana. Along with focusing on their individual plans, all 10 districts will share the challenges and successes they encounter in carrying out the standards. Lessons learned in the process will be made available for all districts in California.
