- Tuesday, August 8, 2023
Garden Grove Unified School District’s Board of Education hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Los Amigos High School on August 7 to celebrate the grand opening of the school’s new state-of-the-art athletic facility which features a nine-lane all-weather synthetic turf track and field.
Superintendent Gabriela Mafi welcomed hundreds of attendees including Los Amigos High School athletes, staff, alumni, and families to the event. Before cutting the ceremonial ribbon, Board Trustee Bob Harden, whose trustee area includes Los Amigos High School, delivered the keynote speech. Board of Education President Walter Muneton, Vice President Teri Rocco and Trustee Lan Nguyen also attended the ribbon cutting along with Orange County Board of Education President Tim Shaw, Santa Ana City Councilmember Thai Viet Phan, and Garden Grove City Councilmember Cindy Tran.
This was the third and final ribbon cuttings for the new state-of-the-art track and field which has been built at Los Amigos, Santiago and Rancho Alamitos schools. Each project comes with a nine-lane new synthetic track, a synthetic turf field, long jump and triple jump pits, new LED lighting, 5-tier aluminum bleachers, athletic equipment and accessories, fencing, storage and ADA upgrades.
“I am confident that this new facility will bring new excitement and energy to our outstanding athletic programs who have dedicated coaches and hardworking players,” said Harden.
Last year, Los Amigos fans celebrated CIF league championships for boys baseball, boys and girls water polo, football, and boys soccer and softball made it to the second round of playoffs.
“To our athletes here today, we wish you an exceptional season ahead,” said Harden. “We know that the friendships you develop on these teams and the character skills you gain on the field will last a lifetime.”
Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting, the Board received certificates of recognition from several elected officials and posed for photos with hundreds of excited athletes.
The new track and field was funded in part by Measure P, a $311 million bond measure which received 76.3% approval from voters in 2016 and allowed the district to build 2 state-of-the-art athletic stadiums, including the Michael A. Monsoor Stadium at Garden Grove High School which opened in 2017 and the Stadium at Bolsa Grande High School which opened in 2019.
