GGUSD’s 2019-2020 Annual Report Showcases Students’ Academic and Personal Success

Garden Grove Unified School District this week published its 2019-2020 Annual Report which is mailed to families in the community and showcases the district’s success in equipping all students with the academic and personal skills needed for lifelong success.

“Our Annual Report honors our promise of transparency to the community and demonstrates our uncompromising commitment to ongoing improvement,” said Lan Nguyen, Board of Education president. “We are always looking at innovative solutions to close the opportunity gap and ensure all students receive the education and resources they need to be successful.”

In the area of academic skills (Goal 1), the report highlights GGUSD’s high level of growth in the percentage of students who meet or exceed standards on the California SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) exam. GGUSD students outperform the county and state average with 60% meeting and exceeding standards in English Langue Arts compared to 58% in Orange County and 50% statewide and 51% meeting or exceeding standards in Math, compared to 49% in Orange County and 39% statewide.

GGUSSD credits its phenomenal teaching staff, pointing to the high level of specialized professional development, not offered in most school districts. GGUSD also touts its work in equipping students with scholarly habits through AVID and extended day supports, as well as tripling the district’s investment in technology to provide a better than 1:1 ratio of computers to students and a 21^st century learning environment.

GGUSD is committed to the whole child and that includes helping students develop personal skills necessary for students to achieve their academic and social goals (Goal 2).

The Annual Report showcases the district’s Goal 2 successes, including many award-winning PBIS schools, student reported pride in school, and the district’s new Choose Wellness campaign aimed at addressing students’ socio-emotional well-being and school climate and culture.

Finally, the Annual Report provides updates on district success regarding preparing students for lifelong success including college and career readiness (Goal 3). Some of those highlights include leading the county and state in a-g rates or the number of students who qualify for admission into both CSU and UC systems, as well as being a leader in Advanced Placement pass rates.
